The intention for 3826 Lancaster Ave. is to install a temporary architectural “armature” on the façade of the building.  An armature, in brief, is a new “skin” which is situated proud of the existing structure which will give the building a new aesthetic perspective.  Hopefully this will give the surrounding area a boost of interest by the community for a greater sense of purpose, and enhance the experience of Lancaster Ave. as a retail corridor.

The particulars of this armature are of a temporary nature.  The structure will be anchored into a concrete “curb” or pedestal which will be brought to the site (not cast onsite – to be clear).  The top of the armature will be anchored into the existing brick with a device called a sleeve anchor.  The advantage of the sleeve anchor is to install the armature securely, but more importantly, after installation release the sleeve anchor and fill the void with an epoxy making the void permanently filled.

Once the connections are secure,  ½” rebar will me installed to make the new surface frame.  The actual shape of the frame can be determined onsite allowing for the more “artistic” interaction while the surrounding vernacular can be part of the influences used to execute the details.  The frame will in essence be the armature, but would allow for additional elements, like stretched fabric, to be installed in tension on the structure.  The steel and the fabric can be painted or purchased with appropriate color to enhance the aesthetic.  The end result should be a transformation from an otherwise “plain” corner into one of determined destination.
